Superba e rara grande carta geo-pittorica in 6 fogli uniti e riportati su tela pubblicata dal Service Geographique de Madagascar nel 1940 quando l’isola era ancora una colonia Francese. La carta mostra indicazioni pratiche per gli spostamenti come le principali vie di comunicazione, i fiumi, le foreste e le altezze in metri dei rilievi ed è ricchissima di vignette che rappresentano le peculiarità, edifici storici, flora e fauna del Madagascar. Completata in alto a sinistra da un inserto con le isole Comore, da una rosa dei venti ad indicare l’orientamento geografico e dalle belle illustrazioni di navi, vascelli e balene nell’Oceano. La mappa è opera del pittore, incisore e illustratore Urbain Faurec (pseudonimo di Urbain Marie Eustache Faure) che arrivato da bambino a Tananarive visse tutta la sua vita sull’isola fino a diventarne curatore del Museo Nazionale.

Fine map engraved map by Giuseppe Pitteri showing East Africa, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia, covers also the Red Sea and the coast of Arabia, naming Jiddah and Aden. The title cartouche appears on a stone monolith. From Atlante Novissimo, illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni, e scoperte fatte dai più celebri e più recenti cartografi by Antonio Zatta published in Venice 1779-1785. A large pictorial map by J. Choain Audiberti of French Equatorial Africa showing several African countries including Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Gabon, Central African Republic and the Belgian Congo. The map is illustrated with lovely vignettes of people, farming, trees, mountains and animals like tigers, camels, horses, antelopes, ostriches, giraffes, elephants. It is completed by ships at sea, cars driving through the desert, planes flying over the map; at bottom a fine cartouche with a traditional African village scene surrounding the larger map of Africa. Beautiful little map of Morocco from the Mercator Hondius “Atlas Minor” published in Amsterdam in 1648 at Jannsonius with german text on verso. In 1607 Jodocus Hondius published a reduced size version of Mercator’s “Atlas”, itself suitably titled “Atlas Minor”. The maps were copied from those of the great cartographer Mercator of around 1580-90 or were reductions of Hondius’ own maps of 1606.
