Carta strategica dell’Alta Italia

Northern Italy’s detailed map stands out due to its beautiful representation of the landscape and the innovative approach of marking not only the altitude of the mountains but also of the towns in the area. The warning in the bottom right-hand corner, placed under the legend of the conventional signs, is significant: “this map follows the one in a single sheet engraved and published by the Royal Corps of Staff”; therefore, the map is related to the work of the Piedmontese army in anticipation of war. Additionally, a leaflet was added to the middle of the left side to extend the depiction of the territory as far as Turin.

In 1852, Luigi Salussolia established a lithographic factory in Via San Francesco da Paola. In 1855, the lithographers Giordana and Grand Didier joined the company, leading to a relocation of the premises to Via della Zecca (today’s Via Verdi). In 1860, Grand Didier ceased to be a partner, and the company continued under the name Giordana and Salussolia. Subsequently, in 1865, the company moved to Via del Soccorso 2 (today’s Via Maria Vittoria).
