A pictorial map designed by Amsterdam graphic artist Frans Meyer and published in 1947 by the “Stichting 1940-1945,” a foundation established to raise funds for members of the resistance and their families, representing one of the most significant visual records of the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. The map, printed in full-color lithography and enhanced by an illustrated frame with twenty vignettes, reflects the dramatic transformation of the Netherlands between the German invasion on May 10, 1940 and liberation in May 1945, visually illustrating the four main phases of the occupation and its effects on Dutch society. From the initial period of neutrality and the lightning invasion culminating in the bombing of Rotterdam, to the gradual intensification of repressive and persecutory systems to the tragic famine of the “Winter of Hunger” (1944-1945), the map transforms data and memories into a clear and accessible visual narrative.
Beyond its original fundraising function, the map has become over time a visual and symbolic witness to the occupation and resistance of the Netherlands, an essential work in the study of the links between cartography, memory, and historical trauma.
