A very decorative lithograph map of the world by Chocolat Menier. The map features 120 images of explorers, plants, animals, and structures from around the world. Three small inserts present maps of the Congo, India and Tibet, and Israel. A red line of travel connects each place name on the map and the seas are coloured by their distance from the equator. Underneath the map is an area to fix 120 ‘tickets’ collected from Menier chocolate products, with three that giving clues to ‘Enigmas’ that had to be solved.
The Menier Chocolate Company was founded in 1816, as a pharmaceutical manufacturer in Paris, France, at a time when chocolate was used as a medicinal product and was only one part of the overall business.
The artist was J.B. Jannot, who used the pen-name Jan-Loup. He worked as an illustrator for Lisette magazine in the 1950s and early 1960s, as well as authoring his own comic stories and producing book jackets.
