Carta Corografica della Provincia di Salerno e Dintorni

A map of the Province of Salerno, printed on four sheets mounted on canvas, offering a detailed and evocative view of the Campania region between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The map, edited by M. Quartulli and probably printed by the Neapolitan printing house L. Pagnotta, stands out for its practical and educational purpose, as explained in the title itself, “Chorographic Map of the Province of Salerno and Surroundings compiled for use by schools, offices, and travelers,” making it a tool not only for students but also for the administration and travelers of the time.
The map is a ‘chorographic’ map, a term that indicates a geographical map representing a larger area than a topographical map, with particular attention to the physical and political aspects of the territory. the area covered extends well beyond the narrow boundaries of the then Province of Salerno, including the Amalfi Coast and the Gulf of Naples to the northwest, Cilento to the south, and extending eastward to touch the territory of Basilicata (Potenza).
In the lower left corner, below the title and the compass rose, is an explanation of the conventional symbols used to indicate consular, provincial, and municipal roads.
The railways are clearly marked, showing the development of the infrastructure, with a distinction between those already built (solid line) and those under construction or planned (dashed line).
