Published in Amsterdam in 1720 by Joshua and Renier Ottens, this beautifully detailed map of northern Italy depicts the Duchy of Savoy, Monferrato, Lombardy, Veneto, and neighboring territories like Modena and Parma, battlegrounds during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
While partly based on earlier plates such as Justus Danckerts’ 1701 map, the Ottens’ version excels in its superior detail, updated place names, and overall printing quality.
The Ottens, prominent Dutch booksellers and map publishers (c. 1680-1790), were founded by Joachim, a former copperplate engraver for Frederick de Wit. After Joachim’s death in 1711, his sons, Renier and Joshua, led the firm through its most prolific period, making their most significant contribution to cartography in the form of monumental, custom-made atlases.
