A huge geological map of China entitled “中华人民共和国地质图” (Geological Map of the People’s Republic of China), which is one of the most ambitious scientific syntheses produced by Chinese geology in the 20th century. This first edition, printed in 1975, represents a crucial moment in the history of national thematic cartography, as it brings together in a single systematic representation the results of decades of geological surveys conducted on a continental scale. The work was carried out under the direction of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), an institution founded in 1956 as the main geological research body of the People’s Republic of China. The Academy was created with the aim of coordinating scientific research in the fields of stratigraphy, tectonics, mining geology, and hydrogeology, supporting the country’s industrial development through the systematic study of natural resources. Over the decades, CAGS has played a central role in the development of national geological maps, promoting large-scale survey programs and training generations of geologists.The publication was entrusted to the Geological Publishing House, a state-owned publishing house also founded in the 1950s and specializing in the dissemination of studies, monographs, and geological cartography. This publishing institution quickly became the main channel for technical and scientific dissemination in the field of Earth sciences, ensuring high printing standards and wide national distribution.
At the bottom left, the map is accompanied by a legend divided into three parts: “I. Tectonic Systems”; “II. Stratigraphy”; and “III. Magmatic Rocks,” while on the right, a second insert describes the island areas and southern maritime portions. The map also includes territories claimed as Taiwan and those along the border with India in its geological description. Published in the final days of the Cultural Revolution, it can be seen as representative of a broader renaissance of science in the mid-1970s, following the ideological attacks of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
